Who Packed Your Parachute...by Tom Mathews

This was forwarded to me and I wanted to share with everyone that stops and enjoys my blog.

Here is an excerpt from Aim for the Heart ...

I recently read a great story about Captain Charles Plumb, a graduate from the Naval Academy, whose plane, after 74 successful combat missions over North Vietnam, was shot down. He parachuted to safety, but was captured, tortured and spent 2,103 days in a small box-like cell.

After surviving the ordeal, Captain Plumb received the Silver Star, Bronze Star, the Legion of Merit and two Purple Hearts, and returned to America and spoke to many groups about his experience and how it compared to the challenges of every day life.

Shortly after coming home, Charlie and his wife were sitting in a restaurant. A man rose from a nearby table, walked over and said, "You're Plumb! You flew jet fighters in Vietnam from the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk. You were shot down!"

Surprised that he was recognized, Charlie responded, "How in the world did you know that?" The man replied, "I packed your parachute." Charlie looked up with surprise. The man pumped his hand, gave a thumbs-up, and said, "I guess it worked!" Charlie stood to shake the man's hand, and assured him, "It most certainly did work. If it had not worked, I would not be here today."

Charlie could not sleep that night, thinking about the man. He wondered if he might have seen him and not even said, "Good morning, how are you?" He thought of the many hours the sailor had spent bending over a long wooden table in the bottom of the ship, carefully folding the silks and weaving the shrouds of each chute, each time holding in his hands the fate of someone he didn't know.

Plumb then began to realize that along with the physical parachute, he needed mental, emotional and spiritual parachutes. He had called on all these supports during his long and painful ordeal.'

As a leader, how many times a day, a week, a month, do we pass up the opportunity to thank those people in our organization who are "packing our parachutes?"

It's A Boy

Congratulations to our brother, Jeff & sister-in-law, Kristy, who gave birth to Nolan Buster yesterday, August 31st. He was 6lbs 8 oz, 19.5 in long. More pictures to come :-)

Happy Birthday

The Simple Truths of Appreciation by Barbara Glanz

By Barbara Glanz

One of the deepest principles of human nature is the craving to be appreciated. You never know when a few kind words can change a life forever.

In her book, The Simple Truths of Appreciation, Barbara Glanz tells a story about the power of appreciation.

Excerpt from The Simple Truths of Appreciation by Barbara Glanz

When I speak about appreciation, I use this quote by Albert Schweitzer:
"Sometimes our light goes out but is blown again into flame by an encounter with another human being. Each of us owes the deepest thanks to those who have rekindled this inner light."

Then I ask my audiences to please shut their eyes and think about someone, who at some time in their lives, has rekindled their inner light. I leave the room in silence for several minutes, and it is always a profound experience as they remember the joy they received from being appreciated by someone when they needed it the most.

Afterwards I ask them to write down the name of the person they thought of and to commit to their own act of appreciation by letting that person know in the next 72 hours that he or she was thought of. I suggest a phone call, a note, or even a little prayer if they are no longer living.
After one moving session, a gentleman came up to talk with me and thanked me for creating a new awareness in him. He said he thought of his eighth grade literature teacher because she was everyone's favorite teacher, and had really made a difference in all of their lives. He planned to track his teacher down, and when he finally found her, he wrote to her.

The following week he received this letter:

Dear John,
You will never know how much your letter meant to me. I am 83 years old, and I am living all alone in one room. My friends are all gone. My family's gone. I taught 50 years and yours is the first "thank you" letter I have ever gotten from a student. Sometimes I wonder what I did with my life. I will read and reread your letter until the day I die.

He just sobbed on the phone. He said, "She is always the one we talk about at every reunion. She was everyone's favorite teacher - we loved her!" But no one had ever told her...until she received his letter.

Change Your Thinking

It will take just 37 seconds to read this and change your thinking..
Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to
the room's only window.
The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back.. The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation..Every afternoon, when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window.
The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside. The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described all this in exquisite details, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine this picturesque scene.
One warm afternoon, the man by the window described a parade passing by. Although the other man could not hear the band - he could see it in his mind's eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words.Days, weeks and months passed.
One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep.. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.
As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone. Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside. He strained to slowly turn to look out the window besides the bed. It faced a blank wall. The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window. The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall. She said, 'Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you.'
Epilogue:
There is tremendous happiness in making others happy, despite our own situations. Shared grief is half the sorrow, but happiness when shared, is doubled.
If you want to feel rich, just count all the things you have that money can't buy.

'Today is a gift, that is why it is called The Present.'
The origin of this letter is unknown, but it brings good luck to everyone who passes it on.

Ryan's Eye Appt

The appointment we have waited for so long was today... Ryan has been asking for contact lenses for over a year now. Today, Ryan was hoping to get new contact lenses. The appointment started off well, he got his eyes checked and the contacts placed in...however, the Dr. expected him to know how to do it himself before leaving the office...he went in to the exam room so he could learn how to place them in and how to remove them! That didn't go as well. Ryan's eyes were very red from trying and he was a bit disappointed...well maybe more than just a bit! We'll be back next week to try again!

My Dear Husband

My dear husband had surgery today!
It's hard to see him in pain...being that he's such a strong guy!

We we're going to wait in the lobby for him, but gave up since there was a 4 hr delay in his surgery...we went and hung out at Mom/Dad Rowell's house. Korbin had fun playing in baby Jared's slip-n-slip island!! He was having so much fun, he kept running from the big pool to the little island.

My baby is ready to go home and rest, but not before I picked up some pain meds!!!

Hello From Oklahoma

Meagan left for P.E.A.K. Youth Conference, being held in Oklahoma, on Wednesday morning. She was up at 5am! perked up, dressed, and pushing me out the door by 5:30 am! I'd say she was a little over-excited about the trip. There were about 25 kids from our youth group that were going and like half of the Rowell family. Here is a picture she sent me....I asked for more!
Meagan looking pretty & ready to have church at PEAK Youth Conf.

Daddy's helper

Ryan has been a great helper around the house...he really enjoys helping with the yard.
Since Jason's been sick, he's taken care of watering the lawn most of the time. I tried sneaking some pictures of him . Of course Korbin never wants to miss out on the action either. On this particular day, Korbin also decided he wanted to help water the lawn and it ended up in a water fight...lol...Korbin wasn't laughing!! Since he's the smallest and lost the water war!

Happy Birthday Nancy

Happy Birthday to my dear sister Nancy Herrera, who's birthday was July 7th, (she's been pictured on my blog many times :-) I've been meaning to post her b-day message for weeks! Here it is :-)

My sisters...Isabel on the left & Nancy on the right

On the morning of her birthday we called her and sang happy birthday to her!! We had choir in the house! ... my nieces were visiting, so we had a house full!

We love you sister!

Mom's 60th Birthday Party

On Saturday, July 4th, we celebrated my Mom's 60th birthday. Her b-day was actually on the 2nd of July.

And my sister, Nancy, surprised me with a birthday cake!! And I had more bday presents and even a few more presents from her and my sister Yesi for my graduation. How sweet!!! I felt very special ;-)
As you can see from all the pictures we had a fun time. The kids enjoyed hanging out, playing, and lighting their fireworks, since it was the 4th of July.

Due to us being out of town, we did miss baby Jared's 1st bday party that was at Mom's (Rowell) house. I heard it was a blast...and we missed it :-( I wish we could have been at both party's, but being that they were 3 hrs away it was impossible!!
